Air Conditioning in History

Can you imagine the world with no air conditioning?

Unfortunately, I’m sure some of you can. Air conditioning, in our humble opinion, is one of the greatest inventions of the 20^th Century.

Air conditioning took some time to catch on, with only about 10% of homes possessing AC in 1965. However, once it caught on and became more accessible, especially in the hot south, it took the world by storm. In 2007, 86% of homes were equipped with air conditioning.

Today we take our in-home climate control for granted. But, that wasn’t always the case. 100 years ago, before the invention of air conditioning, when it got too hot, things just shut down shut down in the summer, including our government.

Now, some people might argue that shutting down the government was good thing… but this is not a political post.

In 1928, two air ducts were installed to bring relief to the congressmen suffering in the hot and muggy Washington, DC July. The system didn’t look or work quite the way it does today, using water instead of refrigerant to cool the air. But, the basic principals were in place with cool air being circulated throughout the building via ducts.

Today, we rely on the refrigerant R410 A to cool air. The ductwork is smaller but the end result is still a cool, comfortable room.
