When the summer temperatures rise, so does your energy bill. Don’t let the heat, humidity and a high energy bill keep you sweating any longer. There are plenty of ways to keep cool and save money during the summer months. Here are some of our easy and cost effective summer cool-down tips.

Keep your house closed up tight during the day when it’s the hottest. Do not leave blinds or shades open. Letting in all of that sunlight during the day will make your home feel like oven when you get home from work.

Speaking of fans, run your ceiling fans during the day when you are out of your house. You can also lower your energy bill by keeping your thermostat set at a higher temperature if you are using your ceiling fans.

Make sure you are keeping any sources of moisture out of the house. Use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is running. This will decrease the cooling load and cause your air conditioner to work less, saving you more money.

You also need to be conscious of your home appliances. They can produce extra heat in your home without you even realizing it. Air-dry your dishes instead of using the dishwasher’s drying cycle. Turn off your computers when you are not using them. Also, unplug your toaster or coffee maker when you’re done using them. Take showers instead of baths to help reduce hot water use. And don’t forget to wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Using your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer only when necessary will reduce the amount of heat being produced inside your home.

You also need to plan ahead. If you have an air conditioner that is 10 years old or older you may need to replace it. The older your machine gets, the less energy efficient it is. Air conditioners might look the same, but their Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) can vary widely. Machines with a higher SEER number will save you more money.

Don’t let the blistering heat ruin your summer and leave you broke. Save money and stay cool by closing your blinds, turning off your appliances and utilizing fans as much as possible. Keep in mind your outdated air conditioner could also be the source of your high energy bills.
